Ten Years and Thriving!

Ten years ago, just as the building of the Pavilion was nearing completion, there was considerable disappointment when the local GP practices decided not to take on the purpose built consulting rooms designed for medical use. So the idea of a complementary health clinic was hatched; a way of offering health provision from our wonderful new community building but not quite as originally envisaged! Well, the idea has proved to be a sound one, as ten years on the Cholsey Complementary Health Centre is thriving, and continues to support local people in improving their health six days of the week. Seven of us (three of the original group) are still there and we all value the immense privilege of having such a fantastic base in the heart of the village.

Over that time we’ve been home to some very talented colleagues, from nutritionists to yoga therapists to mindfulness teachers. The current group consists of acupuncturists, herbalists, a sports and remedial massage therapist and a Pilates teacher. Fran also runs a very successful and innovative apprentice herb training course from the Pavilion, and as a group we have set up a local Wellbeing Network to put local practitioners in touch with each other.

We’ve held a number of Health Open Days, well attended but could have been better. One of our old teachers used to say that ‘they will spend £800 at the drop of a hat because their car manufacturer tells them to but they’ll be reluctant to spend that on themselves and their own wellbeing.’ Very true! There is a great deal to be said for prevention; the ancient Chinese said it was folly to wait until you were thirsty to dig a well or try to forge a spear after the battle had started. The idea was to stay well rather than wait until you got ill. We’d all say the same, that getting better and staying well is a laudable aim, but not many people think about staying well and getting even better. That’s what motivates us.

Here’s to the next ten years!
